Top Colon Hydrotherapy FAQs

  1. What is colon hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy, also known as colonics or colon therapy, is the gentle infusion of water into the colon to cleanse it of accumulated waste material, gas, mucus, undigested foods and other toxins. It helps improve muscle tone, facilitating natural peristaltic action necessary for efficient removal of waste and absorption of nutrients. Colon hydrotherapy is a natural process that stimulates peristalsis which in turn tones and hydrates the colon. Enemas are not as thorough as a colon hydrotherapy session. Laxatives cause the colon to spasm in response to aggravation and can be dehydrating.

  2. What does the colon do?
The primary functions of the colon are to absorb water and electrolytes, to synthesize valuable nutrients (such as vitamins B and K) and to prepare and store fecal waste prior to elimination. Beneficial flora in the colon can also help protect the body from infection and disease. Colon hydrotherapy, in combination with proper diet, supplementation and exercise, can bring back this essential flora, which is responsible for the synthesis of valuable nutrients to restore proper balance. It is believed that 60-70% of the immune tissue of the body resides in the colon and intestines.

  3. Why is colon health so important?
The colon, along with the skin, kidneys and lungs, is a major organ of elimination of toxins and waste. If bowel movements are irregular, waste products and toxins can build up. These accumulated poisons are often re-absorbed into the blood stream where they may be carried to other tissues and organs of the body, compromising our health. Think about the potential negative impacts to your health as toxins are re-absorbed into the blood stream over time. Toxic waste build up can be the root of a variety of different health concerns.

  4. What are signs of a colon that is not functioning properly?
When people talk about symptoms they usually say that some of the following issues have occurred over a period of time: constipation, coated tongue, bad breath, sallow complexion, dark circles under the eyes, abnormal body odor, cold hands and feet, unstable blood pressure (up or down), brittle nails and hair, sagging posture (pot belly), tension, fatigue, allergies, indigestion, menstrual problems, swelling of legs, asthma, backache, and loss of memory or concentration. These symptoms may indicate colon toxicity which is a process where the toxins in the colon actually poison the body over time.

  5. How does colon hydrotherapy compare to an enema or laxative?
Colon hydrotherapy is a natural process that stimulates the peristalsis which in turn tones and hydrates the colon. Enemas are not as thorough as a colon hydrotherapy session. Laxatives cause the colon to spasm in response to aggravation and can be dehydrating.

  6. What results can I expect?
Colon hydrotherapy is not a cure or treatment for disease. It is an adjunctive therapy that can assist the body in the detoxification process. Most people can return to their daily activities right after a session. If a client has certain health issues or is very toxic, it is wise to rest a bit after a session. Although weight loss is not a primary goal of colon hydrotherapy, removing excess fecal material may allow the body to function better, thereby increasing metabolic processes which may lead to weight loss. After a session, clients typically feel relaxed and grounded, with enhanced mental clarity.

  7. Will normal flora be disturbed?
Colon hydrotherapy helps to restore normal bowel flora. An imbalance usually comes from years of improper eating, lack of exercise and poor elimination. Colon hydrotherapy, in combination with proper diet and supplementation, can bring back this essential flora, which is responsive for the synthesis of valuable nutrients.

  8. How many sessions are needed?
This depends on the individual. For many people, a mild cleanse may be sufficient, while other may take more sessions to remove years of built-up toxins. At Skye Wellness, your therapist will have the opportunity to assess your progress and offer suggestions for the future that accommodate you needs and objectives.

  9. How long does a session last?
The initial session is 75 minutes. This allows the therapist time to review your history and provide information and feedback of what to expect during your session. Subsequent sessions last 45-60 minutes.

  10. Do treatments hurt?
No. In fact, many people report their colon hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing.
