The GAPS Diet

Skye Wellness specializes in Gut and Psychology Syndrome™ (GAPS™) consulting. GAPS is a condition which results in an imbalance in probiotic and pathogenic gut bacteria and a breakdown in digestive and brain function.

Did you know that 85% of your immune system lies within the gut? The gastrointestinal tract is in control of many vital functions for your health, including efficacy of stomach digestion, nutrient absorption, bacterial composition, hormone release and detoxification. Additionally, 99% of the body’s neurotransmitters (those feel-good chemicals) are manufactured in the small intestine. It is easy to see the critical role gut health plays in overall health. Whether your condition is psychological or a physical disease, the GAPS Diet will allow repair throughout the many systems of the body.

At Skye Wellness, it is our experience that the GAPS Diet is the best approach to address the causes for many gastrointestinal illnesses, skin disorders, allergies, anxiety, depression, autoimmunity and many other disease states. The purpose of the diet is to detoxify and cleanse utilizing specific nutrient-dense whole foods, probiotics, fermented foods and supplementation. Over time, this therapy will improve immune function, through improved digestion and nutrient absorption. In order to achieve this, we need to clean up, seal and focus on proper functioning of the digestive tract, so it stops being the major source of toxicity in the body. Once healed, the digestive tract will become the source of nourishment, as nature intended. The majority of toxins floating in our blood (and getting into the brain) come from the gut. Dropping this level of toxicity in the body will have dramatic effects on overall health.

Skye Wellness believes you should pursue the GAPS Diet if you are challenged with acne, acid reflux, ADD/ADHD, allergies, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, autism, autoimmune disorders, bladder or urinary tract infections (including chronic cystitis), candida, celiac disease, colic, colitis, constipation, Crohn’s disease, depression, dermatitis, diabetes, ear infections, eczema, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorders, heart disease, hormonal imbalance, hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), leaky gut, psoriasis, sinus or yeast infections. Additionally, if you have a history of antibiotic use, this diet is for you.

The GAPS Diet has a three prong approach:

  1. Diet: GAPS conditions are essentially digestive disorders. The digestive system is essentially a long tube. What goes into this tube and how well this food is broken down and absorbed has a direct effect on your health and well-being.
  2. Detoxification: Primarily through colonics and enemas
  3. Supplementation: Varies, based on specific needs of individual client

The GAPS Diet was developed by Natasha Campbell-McBride, M.D. She holds a degree in medicine and postgraduate degrees in neurology and human nutrition. Her practice, The Cambridge Nutrition Clinic in Cambridge, is where she has practiced for the past fifteen years devoting her time to helping patients. She believes the link between physical and mental health, the food and drink that we ingest, and the condition of our digestive system is absolute. In fine-tuning her approach, some of the other health pioneers and researchers she has studied are Sidney Valentine Haas, M.D. the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), Elaine Gottschall, Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health through Diet, Mary Enig, Know Your Fats. She is a frequent speaker at the Weston A. Price Foundation conferences.
